Full metal bikini

"Private Rau, front and center!"

Her demeanor was demanding and angry, like a parent scolding an errant child, eerily reminiscent of Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey's character in Stanley Kubrick's classic Full Metal Jacket. Not at all what I was expecting, not even close. Looking back on it, I suppose I had been spoiled by Debbie's personality. Debbie was sweet, understanding and caring, I wasn't even sure it was possible to get her angry. Anrol Anthony, the dean of UCWS, on the other hand already seemed to be.

I had gone into my final full of confidence, I was as steady as the proverbial rock, not even a hint of nervousness. Why should I have been? I had gone through the checklist several times and made sure I was able to meet or exceed the requirements. The ARC test? Ha ha, I was so far below maximum on all three outfits I thought it was funny. The beach and dome? Not a chance, I had practiced them repeatedly and even had notes to refer to at the ready. The huddles dance with the dean? I had already done that many times over with my fellow students. The character test and quick change? I already had loads of experience with the character test thanks to SL glitches and had already pre-made my quick change folders. I had gone over the final several times in my mind trying to figure out what to expect. I was ready, willing and able, nothing could shake this rock.

Or so I had thought. Less than five minutes into the final I was already on the receiving end of a tongue lashing worthy of the infamous Gunnery Sergeant. My mind went blank when she called Imogen and I to the front and did not praise us as I had become accustomed to during class but instead asked us if we knew how to style ourselves! Wait, what?

She then proceeded to point out a variety of flaws in our outfits. Things like my arc was too low (I thought that was the point?). I was wearing an up do with a casual outfit. Admittedly it was kind of silly to wear an up do with casual attire but in all honesty, arc had been stressed so heavily in class that I figured it to be an overriding factor. Obviously I was wrong. Immediately I began to have doubts, not in my ability, I knew the poses and formations, but whether or not I would be able to meet Anrol's stringent requirements.

She seemed to have a problem with every tiny, little detail. I had been instructed to have the TP to all three points we were to be tested on. I neglected to collect the landmarks thinking I could just as easily fly there.

"Drop and give me 25, private Rau!"

I was sorely mistaken and as the evening wore on I felt smaller and smaller with each tongue lashing. By the time I had reached about two and half feet of self esteem I experienced a feeling I had not known since childhood.., I wanted my teddy bear.

During the casual portion of our finals, Imogen and I had been given 30 minutes by Anrol to TP out and find something more befitting of a casual look. A part of me simply wanted to tp home and log out, but I am no quitter. I would see this through to the end no matter what kind of grade she gave me. During my brief shopping excursion my mind, as it has already been prone to do, began to wander. She reminded me so much of my parents whenever I would do something wrong. Why?

Getting past the beach formation Imogen and I were again called before her, it was time for the character test. She instructed us to take a photo of ourselves as "newbies" and as I looked at my pitiful self..,

... it hit me like a thunderbolt. She cared. Anrol was not the evil monster that had been hiding under my bed since I first began to sleep with the lights out. She was more of a mother hen. She was curt, strict and demanding not because she wanted to break me down like a drill sergeant, but because she wanted my best. She had an image of what it took to be the best and, with the help of her instructors, wanted to mold me, and my fellow CWS students into being just that, the very best.

That is exactly what I intend to become. To everyone at CWS, to my teachers, my fellow students, and to Steve and Anrol, thank you for everything.

Oh what a night!

The crowd noise was thunderous as the five finalists for the 2011 Ms International pageant came onto the stage. Representing the United States was one of the most accomplished models in all of SL, Ms. Nickle Sparrowtree. Decked out in a luscious, gem encrusted blue gown with star spangled headpiece she certainly appeared worthy of representing the highest profile country in the world.

Representing their neighbor to the south, Mexico, the vivacious Sunrae Suntzu sported a lovely fuchsia gown which gracefully hugged her delicate figure as she waltzed across the runway.

Not to be left out, France was represented by the angelic Sidney Abbot, who floated about the stage in a flowing white gown with a patriotic drape and millinery.

Ms Peru, Kiralyn Destiny rocked the audience with the most elaborate gown of the event, a fervid convivial ensemble that had to be seen to be believed and then there was Diana Balhaus, who looked absolutely ravishing in her red gown proudly supporting the country of Spain.

The festivities were aplenty with DJ Skeye Harbour doing an impressive job of making sure the crowd remained a lively one. The suspense continued to mount as the evening wore on and finally the time had arrived to announce the winners, or had it? It turned out Anrol Anthony, the CEO of Classic With Style, who had promoted the event had one more surprise in store for us, a special live performance by international singing sensation Essence Bilasimo!

The lovely young singer captivated the audience with her mystic vocals as she performed several of her greatest hits., keeping their attention on the stage, though she failed to keep them riveted to their seats, instead she had them dancing in the aisles!

The finalists appeared calm and congenial on the outside but one could only imagine the anxiety consuming them from within.  The suspense continued to build behind the enchanting dam of Essence's music but it would all be over soon. Concluding her set, the singer exited the stage to pomp and circumstance fit for a queen before taking her seat near the judge's chair. For a solid ten minutes, the applause and cheers reverberated throughout the dome before ebbing. Now, finally, the moment had truly arrived to announce the evening's winners. More than 200,000 $L would be given away to the five finalists of the Ms International 2011 pageant. Mrs. Anthony, our MC for the evening announced the first winner, for Ms Photogenic.., Diana Balhaus!

The dome lit up as the resplendent Ms Balhaus accepted her award with cameras flashing ravenously. The audience clapped and cheered as she took her place on stage so that our next winner could be announced, Ms Creative Talent. This year's theme was World War II so it was only fitting that the winner would be the representative of one of the wars primary players, Ms France Sidney Abbot!

As with her predecessor, Sidney gratefully accepted her award in front of the wildly cheering audience. She posed dutifully to allow perhaps thousands of pictures to be taken before finally returning to her place on stage. Now it was time to announce the place finishes. The prizes for each place finish was announced by Anrol, the fourth runner up would receive a guaranteed 5,000 $L, the third runner up would be awarded 10,000 $L, the second runner up would get 25,000 $L while the first runner up would be taking home 50,000 $L with the winner pocketing a cool 100,000 $L and a free Pageant Jewelry set proudly donated by Alyssa Bijoux, owner of Alyssa Bijoux Jewelry.

Ms Sidney Abbot was announced as the fourth runner up and receiving the 5,000 $L prize. She appeared relieved that the suspense was finally over for her as she accepted her award. The third runner up was Diana Balhaus of Spain who took home 10,000 $L and left us with three remaining finalists, Nickle Sparrowtree of the USA, Kiralyn Destiny of Peru and Sunrae Suntzu of Mexico. They were called to the front by the MC Anrol Anthony and asked to line up side by side on the stage.

The women stood by front and center, nerves racing up and down their body as goosebumps while Anrol, who seemed to delight in the suspense opened the envelope for the second runner up, Ms. Kiralyn Destiny! The ornately decorated Ms Peru accepted the hugs and congratulations of the remaining two as well as the 25,000 $L promised. It was now time to announce the second runner up and the winner of Ms International 2011 but Anrol had one last trick up her sleeve, rather than simply making the announcement she decided to 'Do it with style' by directing our attention to the fireworks now lighting up in the back of the building. With baited breath we watched with fluttering eyes as each firework exploded in the air to form a letter. One by one they fired off to spell it all out for us, Congratulations to Ms International 2011 Ms Nickle Sparrowtree!

All in all it turned out to be one hell of an evening, replete with drama, suspense, laughter and excitement. Congratulations to all of our top five finalists, tonight you proved conclusively why you are 'Simply the best'.

Blogging is hard

OK, so I'm supposed to start writing in my blog for class and as it turns out I'm going to be graded on it! I've never done this before so I am understandably nervous. I decide to dig up my class notes and see if I can get an idea on how to do it but nothing is forthcoming. I hate this, all of this reading and thinking, I'm a model, damn it! Where do they come up with this literacy nonsense? Last time I checked it was Classic with Style University, not MIT. Finally, after two Red Bulls and a Tylenol I find the class notes pertaining to setting up my blog. I read it aloud..,

"Blogging can fun.., use lots of keywords.., spell check often.., blog shows and events in third person..? What's that?"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: Third person is a narrative style used by writers to depict the observations and views of a separate, neutral party.

"Wait, so I'm supposed to find another person to write my blog for me?"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: No, you're supposed to make it look that way.

"What the heck are you talking about?"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: Umm.., this is stuff you should have learned in high school.

"Honey, I was the prettiest girl in school, the nerds did everything for me, no thinking required!"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: Hunh, I was wondering about my 17 year blackout.

"So I just need to find a nerd. I know! Debbie is a teacher, so that makes her one by default!"

Cradling the soft case of my i Phone 4 in the palm of my hand, I sift through the touch screen buttons leading the way to my calling list. Scanning intently I find Debbie's name and bring up her number, lifting the phone to my ear as it begins to ring softly.

"Did you know Debbie has the Barney song as her ring tone?"

Hello?

"Hi Debs, it's Darian. I need your help with my blog."

What can I do for you hunnybunny?

"I need to find a third person to write it for me, can you write my blog please?"

Hahahaha! Darian, you're so funny!

*Click*

"She hung up, that..! Great! Who do I call now?"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: How about Steve?

"Are you kidding? He's a man!"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: So?

"So, all men have this genetic defect that makes them fall madly in love with me. I can't risk it, I heard Anrol can be pretty mean. That's why I haven't done any CWS fashion shows yet, could you imagine the chaos when I stepped out onto the runway?"

DARIAN'S BRAIN: I know, nap time can get pretty wild. So how about Anrol then?

"She's not my type, don't be stupid."

DARIAN'S BRAIN: Honey, I'm your brain, it goes with the territory.

"Wait a minute, I think I have an idea.., Oh, wow, this is gonna be great! I'm so smart I don't even need you! But I'll let you keep me company, just sit back and enjoy the ride."

DARIAN'S BRAIN: Don't you mean show?

What is Darian's big idea? Will she ever get her blog posted? Will anyone read it? Will anyone even care? To find out the answer to these and other mind boggling questions tune in next post!
